It would be nice if the postback option used ajax instead of refreshing the whole page. Any way to do this?

Hey Greg,

Postback and Ajax are two different things. Postback implies a round trip to the server and will refresh the whole page. I've tried in the past to support ajax loading of tabs but it doesn't work in every scenario.

I really would like to see this. I have cases where I would prefer to load a tab the first time it is clicked, not all at once (where the user is logged in and performance is priority over SEO).

I came to the site today to request this feature not realizing I had already done so some time ago! (grin).

This would be a serious performance feature for DNN. I am setting up most of my site using two DNN tabs (pages) for each page I want to build - a display page and a hidden "page behind". I then use TA with the post back option to display all the modules from the "page behind" page. Using TA I can reduce (not counting the hidden page behind pages) the number of pages in my site and initially load a fraction of the content on each page. This works very well if you have iframes or RSS feeds on the page.

Also, I like the new site design. Really like the new pricing structure!!

Good job Richard.

Rodney-

TA is short for Tab Aggregator. Which I just realized must be the OLD name for Aggregator. Didn't realize Richard shortened the name to just Aggregator

Hi Richard,

I'm on a performance/optimization crusade on PokerDIY (now that Google ranks based on page speed I am spending a lot more time with Yslow/Google Page Speed and FireBug!) - my pages are horribly bloated, big and messy so I am trying to improve that.

One thing I want to do is use AJAX to load tabs on demand, not on load. I know some of the other tab modules do that:
DigRotate, Gumbosoft, DNN360, Mandeeps CSS Tabs (all offer an AJAX loading method)

but I really want to stick to the Aggregator. Would it be possible to consider this feature? I need it quite urgently...

For example - on a poker league page (e.g http://www.pokerdiy.com/poker-league/lid/1129/the-original-poker-club.aspx) - I load all the league info in tabs on the bottom - 99% of people don't click on the other tabs but it makes the page so slow to load. AJAX loading would fix this. This page is 750kb when logged out!!!

Thanks

Hi Rodney,

Have you tried using the postback option for tabs yet? This setting is available in edit tabs. Basically it turns a client side tab into a server side one and therefore the content isn't rendered if the tab is not the active tab. Everytime I've looked into ajax loading of tab content the results have been quite dismal and just doesn't plain work with every module so at this point I'm not considering adding it. I think even Mandeeps removed it from their ActiveTabs product, even though they had it in their previous CSS tabs.

What version is that in? I have still not attempted an upgrade after the problems I had last time.

The problem is that users expect AJAX these days - they really are not going to like a postback - CSS tabs do the same thing now, but Yahoo tabs (on Snow) does an JAX one (that works so far and AJAX Tabs (Gumbosoft seems to work well BUT they have gone out of business with no news it appears...

Thanks for the response though - I might have to mix and match where applicable...

Hey Rodney,

Postback tabs started in 5.6.5 I think.

I understand that users expect Ajax now but if it's not something that I can reliably produce with most of the dnn modules then it's something that I'm willing to leave out as a feature.

Yes, no problem, I know, I was just considering my options. Facebook has driven up user expectations so much and killed so many small sites...
